For beginning and advanced guitar lessons and for children's guitar lessons, Ms. Allison Carvalho is one of the most creative, dedicated, organized, and encouraging guitar instructors available in the Manhattan area. Ms. Carvalho is classically trained and also has a great passion for popular music. She received her Bachelor's degree in guitar performance and also in music education degree from the University Federal da Bahia in Salvador , Brazil . Ms. Carvalho has over 13 years of experience teaching classical and popular guitar to children, teenagers and adults in private and group formats. Ms. Carvalho also teaches musical concepts such as singing while playing, ensemble playing, music reading, ear training and basic composition by utilizing materials created by her and the students.

She promotes and organizes exciting guitar recitals and meetings for the students as a complementary and effective source of motivation. Meanwhile, students also have opportunity to develop performing techniques or just enjoy sharing their musical experiences. Ms. Carvalho enjoys developing personalized programs according to the student's requests - with repertoires ranging from classical music to Brazilian music, American pop/rock/folk, Latin, Spanish and more.

"I had the wonderful opportunity to study and teach in a great music school in Brazil , where I was surrounded by a very creative and inspiring atmosphere. My dear Escola de Música of UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) was and still is notorious for its achievements in the fields of composition, music education and guitar studies. It was like home for me, a safe place to do experiments and research. Its guitar department was one of the most prolific in the country. In the 90’s there used to be an average of 120 new candidates applying for guitar studies every semester. That intense demand pushed the creation of a team of committed teachers. Under those circumstances, developing an efficient methodology was a must and a constant challenge. It was an unusual situation and there were no specialized didactical books on the field to help. We had to start our own method from scratch.

After 8 years of intense participation in that creational process in Brazil , the best guideline I can think of at this point is: More important than finding “the perfect method” to teach or learn something is keeping fresh a creative mind working through a methodological mentality. We need to have both things flowing, no matter if you are a teacher or a student. I still can't fully adopt any method offered in the marked today, as I still prefer to have the trouble of finding personalized ways to make students grow at their own speed … one at a time … simultaneously … in group" : )
